Car accident near Massachusetts college kills biker

Bicyclists are everywhere. However, despite their presence on many Massachusetts' roads and their effort to stay as visible as possible, there are still numerous accidents each year where a motorist strikes a bicyclist with their vehicle. This type of car accident can often yield serious injuries, which was the case in a recent accident near the UMass Amherst campus.

Police say that at around 4 p.m., a 22-year-old was riding their bike when it was struck by a truck. Police believe that the truck was attempting to turn onto Amherst Street when the collision occurred. The biker was transported to an area hospital, and was later pronounced dead by hospital officials.

Meanwhile, it is unclear whether the driver of the truck sustained any injuries. Police have stated that they are continuing to investigate the accident. It is unclear at this time whether criminal charges will be forthcoming.

In the coming days, it is likely that more information regarding this car accident will be revealed. Massachusetts' police may need to determine such factors as the speed of the vehicle, whether there is any reason to suspect driver impairment as well as analyzing the driver's cell phone records. This investigation could reveal further evidence that may suggest that the driver of the truck was negligent in their operation. However, the victim's family members may not wish to wait for a final investigation to be completed, as they may feel that they have the evidence to press forward with a wrongful death civil suit. Doing so will not change the tragic outcome, but a successfully navigated claim may provide some measure of justice as well as financial reimbursement for damages sustained.
