Massachusetts police office injured in car accident

A local police officer has been injured while working a traffic detail, according to authorities. The officer's condition is currently unknown. The car accident occurred in a small Massachusetts town in the early afternoon, and no charges have yet been filed. Local roads were closed for some hours after the accident as police attempted to piece together how the crash occurred.

The officer, a lieutenant in the local police division, was working a detail in conjunction with a tree service when he was struck by a vehicle driven by an 85-year-old local woman. He was taken first to a local police barracks and then airlifted via helicopter to a larger medical facility. The extent of his injuries is not currently known.

Police have not yet determined whether the driver involved in the accident will be charged. Regardless of whether any charges are filed against the elderly woman, the injured officer may be entitled to worker's compensation benefits offered by his department. However, the fact that he receives workers' compensation benefits does not preclude the officer from filing a personal injury claim against the driver.

Sometimes a car accident can be caused by an error in judgment as opposed to willful intent or negligence. However, when a party is injured, Massachusetts law must preside in the matter of determining fault. Should the driver of the vehicle be found responsible for the injuries incurred by the police officer, he may be able to seek further legal recourse by filing a further claim in civil court.
