Driver in fatal Massachusetts car accident faces charges

Sometimes, discerning who is at fault for a crash is not easy. It could take time for authorities to piece together what happened in order to determine exactly what happened in a car accident. It took several days for the authorities to sort out the details of a Massachusetts collision that happened on Dec. 31.

The collaborative efforts of a Vehicle Crash Reconstruction Team from the Massachusetts State Police, the Stoughton Police Detective Unit and the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office combined to document which driver was allegedly at fault in the accident. Authorities believe a 30-year-old driver of one of the two vehicles involved is responsible. As a result of the investigation, she is facing charges of vehicular homicide.

The two vehicles collided at approximately 1:30 a.m. on New Year's Eve. The driver of the car the woman allegedly hit was seriously injured. Even though emergency personnel rushed him to an area hospital to receive treatment for his injuries, he did not survive. What injuries the woman suffered, if any, were not reported. No other information regarding the particulars of the accident was released.

It remains to be seen whether prosecutors can secure a criminal conviction against the woman in connection with this fatal car accident. Undoubtedly, the family of the deceased victim is anxious to discover the fate of the woman who took their loved one from them. Apart from the criminal proceedings, the family may seek relief in a related civil action for the financial damages incurred. If the family proves negligence on the part of the accused woman, they may be able to achieve an award of financial restitution for damages such as medical expenses, funeral and burial costs and pain and suffering. The outcome of either a criminal or a civil proceeding could never compensate the family for the loss of their loved one, but these legal proceedings may eventually offer them an opportunity for some sense of closure and peace regarding the tragedy.
