Massachusetts car accident caused by flying mattress

Anytime a driver puts objects in the bed of a truck, he or she is responsible for ensuring the items are secured for travel. If the items are not properly secured, they can fly out of the truck and cause a car accident. For example, a recent Massachusetts accident occurred when a mattress flew off a truck.

The incident occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 at approximately 3 p.m. on Jan. 28. When the mattress hit the roadway, it caused two vehicles to slam into each other. The driver of the dump truck that was carrying the mattress failed to stop. It was reported by witnesses that this same dump truck was later seen pulled over to the side of the road. The truck's occupants appeared to be re-securing their load.

The driver of one of the vehicles in the collision survived long enough to be taken to a local clinic, but then succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle suffered only minor injuries. Authorities are attempting to locate the dump truck and its driver. Massachusetts State Police describe the dump truck that is believed to have caused the accident as having a white cab, dark bed and wood sides. In spite of the fact that the dump truck failed to initially stop, officers believe its occupants knew they had lost the mattress.

Police are requesting that anyone with information regarding this truck contact them. When the driver of the dump truck is found, authorities may file criminal charges against him or her. Regardless of whether criminal charges are filed, the family of the deceased driver may file a wrongful death claim seeking restitution for the damages they have suffered in connection to the car accident.
